RABEN teams are inter-institutional groups composed of trained individuals who carry out whale rescue operations when whales become entangled in fishing gear. Participants in RABEN include personnel from CONANP, PROFEPA, SEMAR, APISONA, Harbor Master, Firefighters and Civil Protection, FONMAR, Universities, NGOs, and whale-watching tour operators.
RABEN members participate on a voluntary basis, responding to reports of entangled whales efficiently and safely. Whenever possible, they contribute not only their valuable time, but also provide vessels and even fuel.
Without their tremendous support, RABEN would not be as successful as it is today. Thanks to the efforts of RABEN members, more than 100 whales have been rescued, giving them a second chance at life.
